Keep your patience during the break-in period
Acquiring a new car always follows a break-in. A break-in is typically the first 1,000 miles. Remember to maintain your speed level less than 55 mph or the indicated speed stated on the manufacturer’s manual. Accelerate only with a light to medium force, maintaining the engine’s rpm below 3,000 for the first few hours of driving. As much as possible, avoid putting your new car idle for longer periods especially during the break-in. This is because the oil pressure may not have time to send enough oil to every part of your engine.
Drive safely
Being careful doesn’t stop at break-in. A habit to drive carefully everyday lessens auto accidents and collisions which will need repair. Never race your car’s engine when starting up especially during winter. Doing so is a sure fire way to add unnecessary wear to your engine. It is best to accelerate slowly as you start since most engine and drive train wear happens at the first ten to twenty minutes of driving. Contrary to popular belief, warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not always a good idea. This is because the engine does not work well when its at its highest temperature, which results to an incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits, oil contamination and damaged components. Remember to observe speed limits and avoid fast starts, stops and turns to help extend the life of your tires. Also, try not to go over potholes and other road objects. Don’t hold the steering wheel in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds to avoid damaging the power-steering pump.
