Don't Believe These Fuel Economy Myths

We all want to save money. That’s why when we read about trips and tricks on how we can substantially create savings when it comes to fuel economy, we go ahead and try it. But the truth is, there are some tips circulating that simply doesn’t help in increasing our fuel economy. Some misleading tips would even require us to purchase something, costing us money in the end. Miracle Body and Paint in San Antonio Texas compiled some fuel economy myths that you should stop following:

  • I should buy new air filter regularly – Studies showed that a new air filter really only helps if your car has a carburetor. Replacing your air filter doesn’t really do much in increasing your fuel economy. However, the same study did find that a new air filter can improve acceleration. If your only concern is keeping your sports car in peak performance, then you should get a new air filter.
  • Filling up your tank when it’s cool out – You may have been watching the clock and waiting for the temperature to drop before you head to the gas station. According to studies conducted by Consumer Reports, the temperature of fuel varies little during the course of a day, so there’s no foreseen benefit in filling up your the tank during the cool part of the day.
  • It’s better to over inflate a tire – There are some hyper-mileage blogs that recommend over-inflation of tires as a way to improve fuel economy. Doing so can bump up your mileage only in a small amount,  but the after-effect of doing this is much worse. Over inflation increases wear on the tires and decreases the contact patch where your tires and the road touch. This decrease can lower your car’s ability to steer and stop. This is most specially true when you’re in an abrupt, accident-avoidance situations or when the road is wet. Make sure to stick to your car manufacturer’s recommended inflation to avoid accidents.
