Two Dead, One Injured in San Antonio Weekend Car Accident

car crash in san antonio

Two people lost their lives and one person sustained injuries in two separate crashes which occurred in San Antonio on Sunday morning, San Antonio Police Department said.

The first crash occurred in the city’s Northwest Side around 1:20 a.m. after a man driving in the wrong way struck another vehicle in the 9400 block of Bandera Road.

The wrong-way driver died at the scene while the other driver, a 38-year-old man, was rushed to a hospital in stable condition, SAPD said.

Investigation into the crash has commenced.

The other crash occurred around 2 a.m. on the city’s West Side, police said.

The crash happened on Texas State Highway 151 and Potranco Road.

Officers arrived and found a passenger unresponsive in one of the vehicles at the scene of the crash.

The passenger, a 27-year-old man, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver who caused the accident, a 24-year-old man, was intoxicated and therefore booked for intoxication manslaughter.

Wrong-way or counterflow driving means driving a motor vehicle against the direction of traffic. The most common causes of wrong-way driving are drunkenness, recklessness, and orientation problems, especially with the elderly. Driver error, vehicle malfunction or poor roadway design are also other known causes.

Wrong-way accidents are uncommon but deadly. According to statistics, they constitute only about 3% of all motor vehicle accidents. However, they are the leading type of motor vehicle accidents to result in a fatality, claiming about 360 lives in the U.S. each year.

Sixty-nine percent of all wrong-way collisions involve drunk drivers. The majority of the collisions occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

If you drive on the wrong side, you may be fined for driving recklessly or disobeying traffic signs.

For your own safety, Miracle Body and Paint advises that you move out of the way as quickly as possible when you see a wrong-way driver, and then call 911 and report the driver. If you are driving, it is recommended you keep your eyes on the horizon line.
